The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Gondar in Ethiopia has focused on uplifting outstanding youths with disabilities and disadvantages for over 5 years now.
Scholars from all around Ethiopia, as well as scholars from surrounding countries, have been given the opportunity to receive a once-in-a-lifetime full scholarship and all-around support at the University of Gondar, one of Ethiopia’s top-ranked higher education institutions. By accepting these extraordinary Scholars, the University upheld its commitment to training African leaders who aspire to address some of the world’s most pressing issues. And the Scholars have been doing precisely that for the past few years.
They are clearly living up to the Program’s values by participating in community service projects and becoming transformative leaders. Having said that, this year is clearly unique for a variety of reasons. The University of Gondar has graduated its biggest batch of Scholars. On August 10th 2020 the Program graduated its first batch and now it is continuing on with the process of growth. On the 31st of July 2021 the Scholars Program at UoG helped graduate 30 talented Scholars (19 undergraduate and 11 postgraduate).
Moving forward, an increasing number of Scholars will enter the workforce, paving the way for future leaders in industries critical to their countries’ development. These Scholars will go on to become the next generation of community leaders in their respective communities. And, armed with the tools and information they’ve acquired over the years, they’ll be able to convert into change agents wherever they go.
